Answers:
I've got an '83 GTI, so it's the same as the one you're considering [the Mark 1 body]. Look for either an '83 or '84 if you want that particular body style.
Had mine since '88, and I'd probably sell off limbs & organs before I'd part with my baby.
You can find them on ebay - you just have to be patient *or* be willing to travel somewhere to pick the car up.
how much "wiggle room" is there in the sticker price of a new vehicle?
They're very reliable since there is practically NOTHING to them. They have electronic ignition and fuel injection, so there's nothing to adjust or worry about there. Mine needs a quart of oil about every 2000 miles or less, so I have to keep it topped off. I run only Amoco 93 gas & 20W-50 synthetic oil in it. Always have. Runs great, but there are a few sticking points with the car. Namely...
What is the book value on a 2003 Chevrolet Venture LT?
...they tend to leak around the windshield area or antenna area on the driver's side [from rust], and it conveniently runs down onto the fuse box, and due to the angle the relay panel is installed in, the relays fill with water and then, of course, stop working or will "turn on" whatever device they run, whether you want them to or not. Mine is lucky in that it gets to live in a 2-car garage and only gets taken out when the weather is great.
where can i find a 2.2 or a 2.4 v8 engine that will fit in a 1994 chevy S-10?
...they vibrate all over, and will give you a full-body massage at a red light, hehe. Some interior plastics in that chassis are receeding as they age, and they might crack or will at least rattle like crazy. I have little problem finding replacement parts, ultra-cheap, at Pull-A-Part [see link below].
Other than that - it's totally reliable, and LOADS of fun to drive. Very "tossable" since it's so light weight, and aftermarket mods are very inexpensive. The car accepts upgrades rather easily.
Can you get a carfax report while living in mexico?
