To answer both of your questions, I agree with prior answer to buy Toyota, altho Hondas are equally good. Nissan not so much.Best source consistently is CraigsList.org. There is a local chapter in every city, it just means you are dealing mostly with private sellers, but you can haggle for a much better deal than with dealers. It is a fine source to research the current asking prices and what you can expect for your $$$.
Edmunds and CarFax are commercial- huge selection, but hard to check around, as most sellers are cross-country. Google for Used Cars to find local dealers and their locations.

Go to local junk yard and buy a rusted out American crap for $200.i own a repair shop,and i see what most people don't see the bad side of any car,there isn't a brand or make or model of car that wont tear up,or break down,so the old saying the best,you can throw that away,the one car i haven't had to do a whole lot of repairs to is a Nissan,and they still give problems,but not like the other ones do,but all of them even rolls Royce break down,and give problems,so these days you have to choose from the ones that give the least amount of problems,,there's a few that don't,some Chevy,s ,Nissan's ,some Toyota,a,and some other foreign and American made,but i get to see the bad side of any car,and that's when you have to pay the repair bill on it,good luck,i hope this help,s.
