The current consumed by an amp depends on the class and quality. Class AB amps are current hogs generally only 50% efficient at best. Class D amps are much more efficient, some being as high as 80% efficient. Also, to go along with Brian, there is a new topology (fancy word for 'class') that is getting more popular. It's called tripath or something. They claim 90% efficiency. Panasonic has HU's with this. Blaupunkts have amp with this. Relatively small. The benefits of this new 'class t' is better eficiency (more power while using less power), smaller size, and most of all, less heat, which in turn lends to longer cicuit life.My vote goes to Brian, he beat me here...
