Question:
The car is a 94 Cavalier. I got some wiring from a car audio place, but I've got a few wires that didn't match up . . . the car had an orange wire marked "dimmer" and the stereo had a brown wire marked "tel muting." It seems to work without them, but I'd like to know what they're for.
Answers:
Does it matter if you have a 4ohm subwoofer wired to a 8ohm amp?
The dimmer wire controls the lighting on the factory radio. It has a voltage that varies with the dimmer switch on the dash whenever the lights are on, and it would dim the backlighting/display on the radio. Some after-market radios have an illumination input that dims the display when the lights turn on, and that connection would hook up to your dimmer wire if it was equipped.A tel-mute wire is used together with a hands-free kit for a wireless phone. When connected properly, it would mute your radio whenever you made or received a call.

The only thing you need to hook up a newer radio is a hot wire off the battery and a ground to the body or the frame. No other wire madder.More Questions & Answers ...
