What is the difference between an "ipod ready" head unit and an "ipod adapter ready" head unit?

Question:
i want to buy a new head unit for my car that will just let me play songs straight from my ipod, and not through the FM transmitter. there are two that i am thinking of buying, but one of them says it's ipod ready, and the other says it's ipod adapter ready. i just want to know the difference so i know which one to buy.

What is an easy way to break in a 15 inch Solarbaric Kicker sub woofer?

my guess would be with the one that says ipod ready, you can just plug your ipod into the radio.with the other one,i think you have to plug in the adapter to the radio, the you plug in your ipod to that adapter.
