Question:
It may be the amp because a friend gave it to me and it is old. Or I may just be hooking it up wrong because I have never done anything like this. Should I hook the remote on wire to the place that says cont. or acc.? I know the power and the ground are hooked up right. It's just the head unit never turns the amp on.

Will these speakers fit in my 2004 Chevy Avalanche?
remote is only a relay switch that turns the amp on. Just touch the remote wire to you 12v line on th amp to see if its working or not. Grab a small piece of wire and touch one end to the 12v screw and the other to the remote screw. If the amp works when you supply power to the remote it's your head unit. if it doesn't it's your amp. Check your earth and power. When amps stuff up you can usually still here a pop on your speakers when you turn it on.Keith B is exactly right. Just use the small wire and touch the power wire. If it doesn't light up you have problems with the amp or you didn't hook other stuff up right. If that works then connect the other end of the remote to the acc on the wiring harness of the head unit (cd player). Should work, hope that helps.
