If the factory radio shut off like the aftermarket is, I would check all power and ground connections at the radio and check the fuse box connections. Youre probably loosing power somewhere along the line.

Can I replace the stereo in my 2002 Toyota Highlander?

You may have to run a new constant power and a new accessory power from the ignition harness. Also run a new ground to completely rid of the problem.

How does Car Audio Work?

Sounds to me that the wiring to the power supply might not be completely attached. How did you wire it? Did you use electrical tape or did you actually get a wiring harness and use the crimp connections. Deff sounds to me that you dont have it wired correctly.

Its trying to tell you that there is a wire shorting out somewhere. It might be a ground wire or hot wire.It could also be a loose or weak fuse. These types of problems can be real stinkers but can be corrected by some detective work at a local auto shop.

If i want to add another amp what do i do about the remote leads?

Hello.. First thing is first. I am hoping that you chose to use a wiring harness adapter. If not, then there is a possibility that it could be wired improperly. When you say that the radio shuts off, do you mean the actual am/fm radio reception, the power shuts off, or the power stays on but the speakers stop playing? Here is all 3 scenarios. If it is the am/fm radio shutting off (losing reception) then you need to check the antenna adapter and make sure it is secure. It could be the antenna going bad. If you are having problems with the power shutting off then the simplest and least aggrivating fix for this is to just run 2 wires to the fuse box and make the constant and ignition connections there. Be sure that it has a good ground. Another thing that can cause this problem is overcharging. Check your altenator and make sure that the regulator has not gone out. This happens alot and is a sign that the alt is messed up. It should only be at 14 volts at idle. If it reads higher then you could mess up the electrical system. (we have seen this problem several times) If the power stays on but the speakers shut off, then you have a bad speaker in the car that is either about to blow, or is grounding out. Check all the speaker connections to make sure that none of them are touching metal. The sound will go out to protect the radio. Now with all that said, you may have another problem. The 02 cavaliers have the databus retention harnesses. Meaning that you must purchase the "cheaper" retention harness that you run to the trunk of the car and plug in the factory radio, or you can purchase the more expensive module and you can remove the radio completely and it has a GM chip already installed. Some of them come with the door chime module. Without one of these 2 in your car, your airbags will not function if you get into an accident. Life versus music is not a fair gamble. Spend the money and get the harness (if you dont already have it). In order to assure that your airbags are functioning properly, when you turn the ignition on, the airbag light should flash 7 times. If it doesnt, even after you put in the factory radio, then you will have to take the car back to GM to have it re-programmed. Hope this helped!! Good luck and live loud!!
