It sounds like my stereo could power the sub woofer better. The amp is not in protect. and sound does come out of the amp, just not loud (or remotely enough) sound.

Be sure that you are getting enough juice to the amp. Make sure you're running a heavy enough gauge wire for its power leads. Are you running RCA into it, or line level inputs? If it's line level, make sure your head unit is balanced/faded accordingly.
