Just because an amp may be stable at 1 ohm, it doesn't mean it's best to load it it at that. It's always better to load an amp at higher impedance than lower as a higher impedance will cause the amp to run cooler, sound better and last longer.

I would assume that the amplifier amplifies a certain amount of power and if you don't have speakers that will handle that amount of power, it will probably blow them. It is always best to MATCH the impedance of the speakers to the output impedance of the amplifier, not necessarily choosing higher impedance speakers as suggested. For example, using a 4-Ohm speaker with an amplifier rated at 8 Ohms will cause the amplifier to run hotter and is likely to burn-up your amp sooner. Using an 8-Ohm speaker on an amp designed for 4 Ohms will give you less output, and will change the frequency response of the output.
You can try an extreme example of this by plugging a 150-ohm headphone into an 8-Ohm power amplifier - it sounds nothing like a matched speaker, or how the headphones sound when plugged into a dedicated headphone amplifier.
