Can anyone fix some car stereo / subwoofer clipping issues?

Question:
A buddy of mine has a late 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee. He has the Chrysler Infinity gold stereo system, but with an after market Sony head unit and two 12" sub woofers in the back.

Does installing subwoofers in a 2007 Aveo void the warranty?

He enjoys playing his music with ridiculous bass levels, (the bass boost and levels on the subs are cranked, but not maxed) At moderate levels you can hear all the lows, mids, and his; but once the volume on the head unit is cranked, all you hear is ridiculous amounts of bass from the sub, and the super hi hi's (like the cymbals/high guitar leads) and all clarity/mids is lost. And I'm not expert at stereo systems, but it sounds like it's clipping.

Where is the best place to put my noise filter on my car system?

To get loud volumes but a good sound throughout the spectrum, would a bigger amplifier maybe fix this?

Rockford fosgate?

If he likes really sound bass repsonse I suggest he upgrades his equipment, cheap equipment like sony have a really high distortion rating which is a cause of clipping. A good example of a good system is a Alpine head unit with diamond audio subs and amps. All reasonably priced, excellent sound quality and are loud.
If he is not interested in upgrading, the only way to fix this is to turn the gain controls on the amp down intil it stops clipping. Also turn all bass boosts on the head unit down as well.

Subwoofer recommendations?

You should always have an amp with an RMS power 2/3's that of the speakers peak power. Max power on an amp means diddly squat.

Does anybody know of any schools that teach stuff like detailing cars putting on body kits and stuff like that

Why would you want a bigger amp? Wouldn't that just make the subs that much louder? Or are you asking should you get a bigger amp for the mid range speakers? If that is the question, it's not all about the amp. Speakers play a big role. Infinity really makes nice component speakers. Really, there could be so many things that could affect the way that the stereo system sounds, like settings on the actual head unit itself. Try playing with the crossover frequencies on the head unit if it offers them or different listening options. Hope this helps.

I just go a 04 MINI and I need to know which MP3 player will work best? Zune, Zen, Ipod etc?

the subs arent the problem, the head unit is to blame. Yes it is clipping, very, VERY few headunits can actually go to max volume without clipping. He can either A: turn down the bass on the headunit, meaning the speakers all round wont get as much power, reducing clipping, or he can get an amplifier for the interior speakers. Tuned properly, amps wont clip and will go much much louder than a headunit ever can. I suggest turning the bass boost on the amp itself up, and leaving the headunit's bass setting at normal. Interior speakers normally can't handle bass tones very well anyway, you may end up blowing them.

Best 2 way or 3 way component speakers till 300$?

Just let the sub handle the bass, and the interiors handle the mids and highs, after all, thats what subs are for, no?
Turning down the bass on the headunit may also increase sound quality :-)

GM truck Audio loss.?

clipped bass sounds like crap. If the bass is clear than the amp is not clipping. The lower the frequency, the more power it takes to produce the signal. The lower the note, the sooner it will clip.

Hook up subwoofers to OEM CD player in '02 Monte Carlo?

It sounds to me like the HU can't keep up with the sub amp. The mids and midbass take way more power to produce than the high's. That means that your head unit will drive high's a lot louder than the mids. If you are loosing your mids, add an amp for the interior speakers.

What are the steps to unhooking one amplifier in a dual amplifier system?

This doesn't necesarilly mean that your amp is not clipping. Clipped bass sounds muddy and distorted. Play something with a clear kick drum or well defined electronic "bump". When you get to a level that the sound changes, it's clipping. If you're using the bass boost, your signal is probably at least somewhat clipped when you turn it up. Keep in mind that just a 12db bass boost is trying to send 16x the amount of power in the boosted band that it normally would. so if the bass boost is at 40hz, than you are sending or trying to send 1600 watts @ 40hz when the amp is only putting out 100w. If your amp can't produce 1600 watts, than you are clipping in that narrow frequency band. Ie. the boosted part of the signal will clip way before the rest of the signal. It's not as noticible as the whole signal clips but clipping is clipping. only passages containing sounds at or around 40hz will sound different.

Need a good amp to match two Type Rs?

P.S. the "distortion" rating on sony producs doesn't have anything to do with clipping. that guy is clueless. Anything below 1% THD is basically inaudible. That's not what marketing tells you, but that is what scientists say.
