Connect Sidekick 3 to my car?

Question:
Okay, so heres my theory, my sidekick is an mp3 player, i should be able to play through my car radio like an iPod. So I buy the FM transmitter, the plug doesnt fit, so I go to radio shack to buy the adapter, doesnt work, no output, doesnt even break connection when i plug it to the phone, ive tested all parts and the problem seems to be in the adapter. So i exchanged it thinking it was defective, still nothing. Its a standard 2.5mm jack on the phone, any old cheap head phones work... WHY WONT THE DANG THING PLAY IN MY CAR?!?!? HELP!
