How do I access the speakers in an '84 cadillac DeVille for replacement?

I am trying to replace the sound system on my grandfathers cadillac. This is part of a restoration process. I am weary of tearing up the speaker covers on the dash top.

Whats the max handling of stock speaker copper wires?

If I remember correctly you have to take the whole dashboard pad off to get at those speakers. It has been awhile but alot of older Caddys where this way.
