I personally prefer after market audio equipment. It tends to be more upgradeable, more compliant to standards and cheaper.Many in car sound systems use bizarre connectors, dont support add ons (try connecting an ipod to a Ford sound system for example with an add on).

I bought a SatNav with a Ford Galaxy at a price of £1500. Its performance was absolutely dismal - its didnt have half the features of a £400 TomTom. Similarly in the same car I paid £2900 for the in car DVD system for the back - nowhere near as good as the Ripspeed DVD player at £799.
