I'll strongly agree with this, whoever is preaching this, needs to have their head read. An Amplifier in relation to ID, THD, S/N (Noise Floor), and it's rated OHM Power Output to Range, in relation to Levels is totally taken into consideration when "cleanliness" of output is concerned.

Sparky... ;) Grumble... look directly at the specifications... Simply because an amplifier outputs 150 more watts at the same THD does not make it a better amplifier... I will agree the Sony is a better amplifier, but not soley because it has a higher power output rating. Sheesh, man, what school of Audio did you study. Besides... basics... every doubling of power equates to roughly +3 dB of gain...

Since both of those Amplifiers are falling between the decibel step of around 512, you're talking a fraction of increase in dB Sensitivty... as stated by... Alpine @400 Watts... roughly 25.7 dB of output voltage gain... Sony @550 Watts... roughly 27.22 dB... that's a difference of 1.5 dB... so half of a volume increase, hardly anything to get so uptight about.

Futher... the elaborated reasons the SONY is better than the Alpine... and not just based on, "I have owned and operated one for 3 years", and not because it gives a nominal increase in output level....
My 600 watt KENWOOD amp burnt out 2 power subs in less then 2 days?
Both are equally rated with the same (20 Hz - 200 Hz scheme @1% THD+N at 4 Ohms with the same input voltage).
The Sony outputs 550 Watts @ 4 Ohms, 900 Watts @ 2 Ohms... however, it fudges the THD Rating to state 1% at 50 Hz, I'd hazard the distortion over the fullrange is closer to 5%.

Both have a S/N Ratio floor of 65 dBA, however, the Alpine is referenced as "A" Weighted, meaning they're hiding something, so even though both of the amplifiers are crap with such a dBA, the Sony has is more likely to be trusted than the Alpine on this rating as well. With the low S/N floors both of these amplifiers are likely to be somewhat 'noisy' while idling.

The Sony has a wider sweep of Frequency Response listed as 5-300 Hz, as opposed to the Alpine's limited 20-200 Hz, so the Sony again has better specs here.

dont go with the sony xplod amp. the whole sony exlod series is a joke ive heard so many complaints about sony and their products in car audio and yeah hands down you cant go wrong with alpine. by far one of the best brands if not the best brand for car audio.i need an answer fast about my truck sound system. . .?

wow. neither of them are good buys. 300$? I got an 800 watt sony xplod, 2 12's sony xplods, a box and a wiring kit for only 170$............ those are rip offs... i suggest going to ebay and finding an amp that isn't used. get a 4 channel amp incase you want 4 subs hooked up or if you want to bridge it. if you have 12's, you shouldn't get a 400 or 550 watt. if you 10's that is fine. 12's will put out deeper bass though.

i personally have a memphis amplifier that does 500 at 2ohms that i am trying to get rid of that i have had for about a year that i used for about 5 hours of playing time. its still in good condition and has all of the remote gain stuff if you would be interested. im trying to sell it for about 225 if you are interested. if not, id go with the alpine one b/c i have never heard of problems with them. then again ive only used alot higher powered amps...so its hard to give a clear guide to what i think. good luck in ur searchMore Questions & Answers ...
