How does Car Audio Work?

Question:
So if I was to walk into Circuit City and was going to pick out a whole new "system" and I was going to put all new speakers and a new headunit, what other parts would I need (Amp, subs etc.) And what are all the proper terms? I know a lot about Home Theater and stuff, but it seams like Car Audio is totally different.

What is the difference between 2 or 4 ohms and which one is more powerful?

You've asked an intelligent question because many people get discouraged when they go to a shop and find out that there is a lot more cost involved than just the basic pieces of your stereo.
When you replace your factory head unit, you will have to also purchase a dash kit and wiring harness (less than $50 usually). If you want great stereo sound then you'll want a 4 channel amp to run the speakers that you're going to replace in the doors/dash, etc. So now you have the cost of 2 sets of speakers and the good aftermarket wiring that comes with them will have to replace your factory stuff so there'll ne an install charge for that unless the shop is having a special. You'll need an amp wiring kit for this (about $40 or so depending on brand). Ok, now if you want sub bass then you'll need a mono amp for the sub(s) and of course the sub itself. And you'll be needing some better wiring for this higher wattage amp so it will cost a little more than the other amp kit.
I'd recommend at least a 1 farad cap to help you out with the electrical load all this is going to draw.
So altogether you're looking at a head unit, 2 sets of stereo speakers, a sub or subs, a 4 channel amp and a mono amp, a cap, a wiring kit or two, a wiring harness, and a dash kit.
Remember that if you have a newer model car that you may also have to buy an interface if the manufacturer uses any of the car's stereo equipment to house some of the car's computer parts. This can be up to $150 by itself.
Good Luck.

Can i use a car head unit in my home system?

u want a new system u need a head unit and replace speakers if u have real high power speakers youll need a amp to power them for louder sound or else you will just be pushing the 40 or 60w that your head unit pushes...subs are basically the same thing...a good unit needs a better alternator, batteries, capacitors

Is there really a difference with Speaker Wire?
