What sub-woofer/Amplifier package should i get?

Question:
I just bought a 04 Golf that has the wiring ready for an amp and subs.
I am thinking about Dual 10" subs from Kicker, JL Audio or Alpine.
I know somewhat about subs and what I want there, but when it comes to Amps I have nto a clue, and I dont want to go into a shop and have them tell me stuff and I end up getting something I dont need. Any help on what Dual 10" subs and amplifier I should get is much appreciated. (PS: I don't want to spend much more than a grand)

how good or bad are power acoustik amps?

I wouldn't recommend kicker. JL is fine, but is going to be expensive. Alpine are ok, but tend to blow easily. I went to a local car audio shop a few years ago and they introduced me to crossfire (won world competition a few times). I have 2 12" db3's and a 1000w amp, all from crossfire. The original set i bought over three years ago is still in one of my cars and runs (and hits) like new. That set cost me about $950 and they are 12's so you could get something under a grand ok. I like crossfire because of their proper rating. Most of the times, companies like kicker, alpine, etc. overrate their aplifiers, so when you pay for a 800 watt, you're getting 400-600 watts or so. I like crossfire because of what you pay for it what you get. The sound is loud, but it clear and clean. Email me if you need some more help.

Well, the amp depends on how much power each subwoofer needs. For example, if you had 2 12" subs that need about 500 watts each, then you would get an amp that, after accounting for efficiency, would put out about 1000 watts. Basically, your best bet is to either buy a package that comes with subs and an amp, or buy the subs first, then bring them to a place like Cartoys that can look at the writing on the magnet and let you know what amp would be best.

Putting in tape that plays from CD player?

First, I've heard all 3, and unless you want loudness go with the JL's. If you just want it loud, the kickers are the best. As for amps, the best thing to do is match the RMS (root means squared) wattage of the subs with the amp. Everyone advertises peak power, but this method measures continuous power. Also, make sure that the frequency response of the amp goes low enough for the sub (which it will in most cases). Also, it's way better to spend money on the amp than the subs. Most people underpower the subs, and it sounds lousy.

If you are looking at 10's, the rms will probably be 200 watts or so for each sub. You should at least have an amp that has a total of 300 watts rms, if not 400.

Kicker amps are OK, as are Rockford. I like the JBL's, as well. Alpine is nice, but a little on the expensive side.

you can run both woofers from this one amp. your set up will sound the best on the block. it wont be the loudest, it will still be loud, but the SQ will be second to none.
