The mids have nothing to do with getting bass you can hear from down the street. You can hear virtually any system from a ways away under the right conditions. Remember, you get what you pay for. You want good sound, almost any head unit will do. Make sure it puts enough watts out to the mid range speakers, or you'll have deep bass and crappy vocals. This is pretty much a loaded question, you can't expect cheap stuff to sound great. I have a lot of power in my car but it took me years to find out what sounded good. I prefer pioneer decks but they tend to run a little more expensive. Find your budget first, get a decent deck, GOOD cables, and invest the rest in a good amp and subs. Mix and match, listen to others who have system and figure out what you like and what you can afford.
