My sub makes a salt shaker kind of sound, why?

I have one 12' apline type S brand new an i hooked it up to my buddies amp, an it dosent pound it makes a salt shaker kind of sound, i was wondering what was wrong with it. The wires were all in the right place too.

it is dual voice coil sub, there is a possibility that you have the polarities swapped on one of them (hey, we all make mistakes). either that, or you have too low of a load for that amp. for the sps-1222 if you put the voice coils in series and you'll get 4 ohms, put them in series you'll get 1 ohm. for the sps-1242 put them in parallel you'll get 2 ohms, in series you'll get 8. you might have a sps-1222, and i bet you're buddie's amp isn't one-ohm stable.
