I had the same problem on a Vauxhall Carlton about 10 years ago, that was with a Sony unit too.

Although Vauxhalls are now fitted with ISO connectors, the permanent live and switched live (through the ignition switch) are swapped over.

Subs shut off completely but amp still has power?

If you have a bit of spare time and a small screw driver, you can release the two wires from the ISO connector and re-orientate them (ie swap them over). This will save you hacking the wiring about.

OR if it isn't a live power at all times you need to run a RED wire straight from the battery + or use the one from the ciggy lighter.

My Sound System Help?

Vauxhalls have a standard ISO connector but the ignition and permanent live are the opposite way around to Japanese radios.
The Sony wiring loom will have a red wire for ignition feed and a yellow wire for permanent. These will have a bullet type connector in so you can swap them over. Do this and it should be ok.

MTX or Diamond audio?

It would be best to go to a sound shop and get a factory wiring harness but it sounds like your almost there with what you have! It sounds like a bad ground. If the ground doesn't have a good connection, it is the same as unhooking the battery every time! But it could be the memory cable is not hooked up, on almost all car stereos the orange wire is the memory!!! Locate it and run it to a fuse like the 4way flashers. They have power all the time.
