How good is Soundstream nowadays?

Question:
My dad has a Soundstream Reference 500 that he got back in the mid 90s. Its hooked up to 2 kicker comps and they hit pretty good. He told me how good the Reference series was and how good Soundstream was. People say Soundstream has gone down and that it is now manufactured in China and owned by Audiovox or some other company i forgot. Anyways I've just heard that Soundstream has really gone downhill. Is this true?

as much as i hate to say now days they suck , yes there are some good products like the tarantula series(some of it ) but they are nothing compared to the old school soundstream when they were made in america , back then awesome amps amasing speakers , great sound procesors and great tape decks yes once the cars where equiped with aftermarket cassete decks

iirc they are owned by DEI, who also ran PPI, a/d/s, orion, etc... into the ground.

What is cheaper than dynamat and has the same performance?

I owned the original Ref 500 and Ref 200, and was pleased with them, but was never blown away like I was with the PPI art series. From what I have seen, I would not touch SounSTREAM with a ten foot pole since DEI took over. Does DEI make anything worthwhile anymore?
