Don't fret, Javin M will be along to tell you how a cap is useless. He doesn't have the electrical background to know what a capacitor is, let alone what it does. I know this because he and I have had a little chat on the matter and he has trouble backing up his claims with fact, he relies strictly on hearsay.
He'll spout wrong info on how a cap "only puts a strain on the alternator as it is just another accessory it has to charge."
This is true, but only consumes about 1/4 of the power of the dome light so the power consumption is negligible.
He'll also say, "Capacitors take 5 times longer to REcharge than it takes to DIScharge (when bass hits)." which is also false as a cap doesn't fully discharge and the charge time constant is 500 times faster than a cars battery.
Then he'll go on to say "Capacitors are only good for power fluctuations of -up to- .01 volts" which is again, also false.

I have measured with my oscilloscope a 4 volt gain with a cap as opposed to without a cap during big bass hits. In other words, my system dropped 4 volts without the cap than it did with the cap during a substantial bass hit.

He doesn't seem to understand the acid-water mixture has a chemical reaction to the plates in a battery that causes the battery to produce energy and the charging process keeps the acid-water mixture stable to do so.

Well it's no wonder! I guess it would be handy to know that auto manufacturers take into account that 40% of the alternator power is required to run the vehicle (AC, fans, etc.) and you didn't even allow 2%. So of course anything added to the system would cause your alternator to whine and smoke.

My system on the other hand only consumes about 40% of my alternator leaving 60% to go to my vehicle which is plenty. This why a cap is effective in my situation and not yours.

Caps are worthless. Yep, it's true. I've seen no increase in voltage by adding one to my system. Yep, I did do it. The only thing I noticed is that, when I cranked it up (the volume, that is), my alternator started to whine (car running) and smoke! I had to shut the car off immediately! It appears that my alternator was stressed. Proof was in the whinning and smoke.

Why do you charge batteries? Doesn't it charge itsself? What are alternators for if batteries create power? That is rediculous! Alternators are the ONLY thing in your car that CREATE power.
