i just installed a 1200 watt sony amp in my car with 2 subs, the lights dim when the bass hits hard and im afraid im going to damage the electrical system if i let it go. my cars a 95 mustang gt. would a capacitor do the trick? does anyone know how much amperage i have and how much more i need?

1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator
2. Upgrade to a heavy duty deep cycle battery
3. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace the power wire between the battery and alternator and the ground strap.
Failure to do this will result in you replacing them anyway as the alternator will eventually fail.

ok, ur drawing too much off the alt. i would upgrade asap. and really i would not buy a cap. in my opinion caps do notheing but look pretty and cost alot. so upgrade your alt, and buy something next time thats not sony. :PDo you need to hook up the rem on a car amp?
Capacitors are only good for sudden surges. Is the wiring the correct size? Is the battery big enough? Is it in good shape? Are the connections to the battery and your equipment tight and clean. Is your alternator working correctly? A 1200 watt AMP willdraw 100 amps at 12 volts! If you want to run at max power all the time you will need a bigger alternator, larger wiring, a second battery, AND.... capacitors!
a good capacitor will help. you may need a bigger alternator or battery as well. if you have a fuse block, you should be fine with the electrical system because it will trigger before the damage can begin only causing you to replace a fuse instead of burning up the wires. you also have to make sure that you have thick power wire. not a bad idea to put capacitors on the tweets and mids to keep bass from coming through them either.
Turn down the volume until you get a new alternator. As it is,
you are risking your voltage regulator (probably inside the
alternator.) If you want to use all 1200 watts, increase your
alternator size by 100 amps.

Alright. Caps will make things WORSE. It would just be another thing your alt. needs to charge. Caps take 5 times as long to REcharge after a DIScharge. They are only good for power fluctuations of -up to- .01 volt, which is meaningless. You could have 5 or 500,000 farads and none of which would do you any good. Remember, your system can only use power your alternator can create.I can't get my amp and subs to work. What could be wrong?
Here's what you do.
Do the Big3 Upgrade (power -charge- wire from alt. straight to batt., ground wire from batt. to frame, and ground wire from frame to engine block) all in 4g or larger wire.
This will allow power from your alt. to get right into your battery, where it's then used.
Dimming headlights will cease after this upgrade, unless, of course, your alt. is just not big enough.
The factory charge wire from alt. to batt. is TINY. How can 150amps (150amp alt. for ex.) get from alt. to batt. if this wire can only support up to 50amps? It can't. That is why your headlights are dimming and your voltage is dropping (which kills amps).
Now, 4g wire can hold up to 150amps. It makes much more sense to use this for the charge wire as this will allow the whole 150amps to reach the battery, instantly. You must upgrade grounds as well as power wires. They are JUST AS important.
