Questions for car audio experts... why don't my speakers work!?

Question:
what would cause my rear speakers to not work 90 percent of the time, but one or both work just fine 10 percent of the time? The speakers are aftermarket but were installed by the previous owner 8 years ago so I don't know the configuration. How do I know if there's an amp on my system? What is causing the sporadic performance?

Answers:

Are used car speakers worth purchasing?

The most likely culprit is loose connections. Most back-yard installers don't solder the connections, which can become loose in time. Check the connections at the rear of the stereo and at the speakers.

What do you guys think of the alpine type R swr-1242d? is it a good speaker or a cheap one...whats ur input?

If there are no problems with these connections, the problem may be internally in the stereo. Solder joints in the deck could be broken and only making contact part of the time. At this point, it would be best to have a professional repair it, or by a new stereo.
