if you build one, do not make all dimensions the same it will cause for internal resonance that effect the speaker sound quality.I listed a link below that allows you to "build" a box, and the volume is calculated automatically, for a fee they will even build it for you.
Depending on the sound your looking for use a sealed box for accurate tight bass, and ported for a sub that has more kick per watt, but at the expense of sounding a little "boomy"
