How do I check if my speakers are getting power? they shut off alot, but turn on sometimes?

Question:
They aren't subs, but sound pretty good in the back of my car. They aren't stock, but are 7 years old. They work maybe 20% of the time, but usually don't. How do I check to see what's wrong?

Could I hook a switch in my REM wire?

It may not be power issues, it could be that they are not grounded properly, if your amp is tripping too it means your ground isn't good enough. Disconnect the negative terminal from your battery pole and where you have your amp ground, use some sand paper and try to get a smoothe surface and try to screw the ground with 2 screws not 1, I hope it helps I don't think age is an issue!

Best amp for two [6x9's RMS=100w ;Peak=300w] and two [8" round speakers RMS=100W; PEAK=200W; 4OHMS]?

Hello,
Without knowing all of the details. I assume you are getting sound to your High/Mid range speakers. Plus when does the sub drop out? During high volumes or at regular listening conditions, a bump in the road? The easiest way to check for signal would be to hook a smaller vehicle speaker to the sub side while listening to volumes at low. Please verify the speaker impedance is within the amps requirements. However the approach I would take first would be to check speaker wiring. You need to check both the the amp connections and your sub woofer. Sub woofers vibrate and may have a short(Loose wiring). You may have to open the sub box. If this looks fine then it maybe your amp.
Normally when this happens the amp has been damaged. This is due to an amp driven too hard or the speaker impedance was incorrect and driven too hard as well. If you did get sound out of your smaller speaker then the sub driver circuit in the amp is over heating, failing or has failed. Lastly try the sub woofer on another amp if you can.

Connecting ipod to cd player in car.?

proably the grounds. Check that and both the + and - connections on all the speakers. And on older cars, wires tend to become loose and brittle. So pretty much check all your connections.
