I think they told you that b/c that's the most expensive stuff they carry, trying to make more money. They told you that b/c you don't know any better. Memphis does make good stuff, but there are less-expensive (not always Cheaper) alternatives.
If you are looking for SPL (loudness) then Kicker is the way to go for the price (Kicker is responsable for 75% of all world SPL records). For SQ (sound quality), TC Sounds have VERY good subs (they have a 200wrms 12" for $105, VERY high quality, of course this is the first 'level' they have).
Remember, price doesn't dictate quality, personal preferance does!
