Why would a "power cap" be listed at 16V to 24V instead of 12V ?

Question:
I am looking to install an SLP3 Power cap in my car system and I am puzzled over the 16V part of this. Any Idea's ?

The rating is the max voltage that can safely be applied to the cap. Your cars charging system typically will run 14 to 16 volts when the alternator is charging at full capacity so you would not want a 12v cap in your system. Applying a higher voltage than rated to a cap will usually smoke it but can cause it to explode violently.
