Question:
Whenever I see someone with a banging system they are usually JLs. Why are they so powerful, the wattage specs on them are never very high and their subs always have a weird rating of 12W7 or something like that, what does that mean?
I guess my question is are they really worth it?
Answers:
JL has been at the top for years. Reason being, years or research and development. JLs products have so many patents on them, so many unique features and technologies that they are undeniably one of the best, if not the best out there. The find ways to make all their equipment perform at its peak capabilites, for example: having the W7 subs nominal impedance at 3ohms, not 2, 4, 8, but 3, why: because that allowed for maximum performance in both SPL and SQ. Their amps are top notch. And just like Justin was implicating, JLs equipment is under rated, their amps give you more power than what's listed (you'll see on the certificate, that comes with the amp) especially at 14.4volts (when your vehicle is running), their specs on their subs drastically improve once the sub is broken in (better frequency response, better sensitivity, etc). And it's not always about have a ton of watts. Some of the best systems I've seen, installed and even owned haven't been ridiculous power hungry systems. I've seen 500-1000 watt rms systems from respectable companies outperform systems two or three times that size from cheaper companies. Now as far as the terminology of JL, i.e. your 12W7, that is a model number. 12 is the size of the sub, and W7 is the actual model. Check out JLs website www.jlaudio.com, they have tons of articles about their products and technologies and their support sections has even more info to help you out. In my opinion JL is definitely worth the money, if I had to pick my top five overall companies (subs/amps) it would be like so:

1) JL Audio
2) MTX
3) Hifonics
4) Soundstream
5) Kicker

What is the best dual din nav on the market?
JL is top notch. most of their ratings are at 12.6 volts, car off basically. with the car on, the voltage goes up and so does their ratings. if you have money and want the best, JL has it. i have 1 13w7 in my car with their 1000/1 amp and its really clear and really really deafening. the first number(s) in the model indicates speaker size (13w7 =13 inch 12w7 =12 inch) the other number and letter indicate the actual model itself.More Questions & Answers ...
