When I put a disc in the player an ERR message comes on the display.

about a month and a half ago. I heard a brief grinding noise and then it gave me an Error message on all CDs after that.
I think the laser disc reader might have slipped off its track.
I can still hear the CD motor spinning.
The mechanic at the GM dealership said it would be cheaper for me to go to the auto wreckers and find a replacement player off another Cavalier and then install it myself. He said for them to do it would cost around $1000.
Have fun getting the old CD player out. According to the GM parts replacement instructions which the mechanic looked up for me at the dealership, you have to first take off the top section of dash which houses the airbag. (3 screws and some clips) then you must take off the entire instrument panel portion of the dash off before you can get at the CD player and it's wiring. (again 3 screws and some clips) An afternoons work at least. I haven't got around to repairing it yet.

Probably the laser is shot or the motor that turns the CD. Either way it will cost you lots to fix it. Depending on the type of unit you have, it may be cheaper to just buy a new one from somewhere like Best Buy. I know I would. I think Delphi makes that radio and they have had problems with several of their audio units.laser lens is dirty, clean it with a cd cleaner and it will work
