How long should i "break-in" my new BMW 328i coupe?

Question:
I know that with most high performance cars, not really saying that the 328 is that much of a high performance car, you have to wait till your first oil change to really gun it. What is the truth behind it and if so, how should I go about "breaking" it in.

as a tech, we break them in when we PDI them before you guys buy them. (pre delivery inspection) basically if you dont give them hell the first time they are driven off the truck while they are ticking, we have found that they will tick for the rest of their life. after that they are put on the lot to buy you should follow the break in proceedure on the sticker youll find at the top of your windshield, drivers side. basically no high revs over 5k easy driving for a few thousand miles, and definitley dont be late for your 1st oil change, i think you can be a thousand or so under the 15k mark to get it done earlier,
which i would advise. if they give you guff at the dealership just tell them youd like it done now because you're going on a long trip and prefer it to be done at this dealer.
good luck!

P.S. i do not advise following pancakes advise because any service not performed at the dealership is non warrantable. follow our break in as per the manual and sticker and you wont have any issues. if bmw finds out you changed your oil early and the indicator cbs is wrong then they wornt warrany any engine problems and youll be screwed. trust me, ive seen all our new cars come in with no problems at first oil change (15k). the engines are (major)broke in at factory, seating the bearings and rings till the engine is put into use.
just follow your cbs in your cluster and i drive!

Generally, change oil after first 100 miles of easy driving. Change again at 500 miles of normal or highway driving. The engine should be 'broke in' by then.

Generally, during the first 500 miles, you don't want to maintain constant speeds and avoid going over 3000 rpms.
