I think the term Japanese or American usually refers to the company that makes it, though you'd expect a Nissan (or any other Japanese car) made in America would be an Americo - Japanese. They make Jap cars in Australia too - Mitsubishi. Some Jap cars (sold in Japan by Japanese companies) are actually made in Australia to Japanese designs using lots of Japanese parts. As far as being an American car . . . no, the Altima is a Japanese car. It's a car whose design and engineering is based on Japanese culture. Likewise, just because Chrysler is now owned by Germans doesn't mean that it has lost any of its American character because the 300 is purely American in so many ways.
