NHSTA safety regulations no longer allow us to do that.Side impact and having two filler necks just did not cut it with them any longer. Too bad, the travel range was great, a common complaint among customers.

Overall Truck design really, with the previous design trucks there was room for a rear tank AND a spare tire, with the 97 redesign there was room for either a secondary fuel tank OR a spare tire. Ford probably decided it was in everyones better interest to have a spare tire instead of a spare fuel tank and with the single 24 gallon fuel tank the need for dual tanks was almost irrelevant, BTW the front tank is 16 gallons and the rear tank is 18 gallons giving a total of 34 gallons.

2 fuel tanks cause more trouble, and usually most people drive on the same tank, then other tank, the gasoline turns to varnish.You can buy aftermarket tanks that fit in the front of the box if you really need the extra range. They are about the same size as a truck tool box and engineered for safety. Try rowells.com...they offer a 72 gallon conversion and there are others as well. The previous posts were pretty correct in that factory duel tanks are an expensive option to engineer and add to a vehicle if the demand isn't there. Most people are happy with about a 300 to 400 mile range on their vehicle. Paul
If I had to guess, I'd say Federal regs don't allow 2-tanks on passenger vehicles.
Just sort of an obvious thought: If you have 2 tanks, then the car has more weight, so that would decrease the fuel economy, and with gas prices these days, that could possibly be another reason for not making them with 2 tanks anymore.
