Question:
Anyone had any issues with the infamous oil sludge issues in their 1.8t engine. I have a 2003 a4, with only 39k, and the engine has seized. Dealerships said it is not covered under the Audi extended 8 year unlimited mile sludge protection because an oil change was missed, (I didn't own the car at the time) in 2004!! Anyone else had the issue, and what was the outcome?
Answers:
Even with that though, people still had failures with shorter oil change intervals because it's not certified / recommended oil.
Yes the 1.8T has a sludge issue because VW/Audi dealers FAILED to use the specified oil recommended by VW. That being synthetic 5w40. It is really VWs fault for not FORCING the dealers to use the proper oil. It even states in the owners manual to only use 5w30 or other 30 if 5w40 is not available, but not to use the lesser oil over the long term. But now it seems dealers DID have synthetic oil available, they just never told owners that they had to pay extra to get it, which is deceptive and seems illegal. But then I don't know if VW printed in their US version manuals that synthetic was required for 1.8T. They only updated / CLARIFIED and printed it later in the sludge letter they mailed out. When I had mine in 2002, I used 0w40 from the 2nd oil change till 39k miles with no problems.
What the hell happened to the Q45?
Searching the forum archives it seems a few people have been denied warranty claims for missing 1 oil change or changing the oil themselves. There is confusion whether VW requires it to be performed by a licensed oil change place. They don't trust owners even if you have receipts of what oil you used. I don't know what the outcome of their battle was so you should join the forum and message them. But the guy whose email & phone number is in one of the posted links below needs more affidavits from owners like you.
03' Galant vs. 03' Accord: Which one is better?
Your whole engine might have to be replaced, or only the oil pump, screen, turbo, pistons, bearings, or other parts will need replacing. But it will still cost up to $14,000. I don't know if taking it to another dealer will help since the other dealer said no, and their denial will be in the computer system.
One reply said people should contact the local news agency and try to make a fuss about it on TV so you will be noticed. You can also contact your attorney general and there is a complaint form you can fill out.
Suggestion: lets go further on the question of when the oil change was done before the missing oil change and when it was done after the missing oil change. How many miles were accumulated between these two oil changes and when you have this information, what does Audi recommend for mileage on when oil changes are to be done. Keep pushing on this issue as it takes heavy abuse to cause this problem.
Is there a way to raise the front of my 2006 silverado without doing a total lift kit?
You may also want to throw in that the Audi 1.8 engine has a notorious sludge problem. The sludge is usally associated with Japanese-make engines, but the 1.8 was one listed in the Top-10 for sludge problems. it sounds like you are on top of this issue! i know all about it since i am a audi tech and it sounds like you know all about it. audi should replace this. i think you should go to another dealership too. i have done sludge replacements on engines as old as 1997! and they covered it! perhaps you might need to go to court because it will not be cheap to come out of pocket for this.More Questions & Answers ...
