If you are about to buy a 300ZX and planning to do an engine swap, you need to decide what kind of engine you want before you buy the vehicle.
If you are looking for a Twin Turbo (TT), you are better off buying a used TT. Otherwise, buy any Naturally Aspirated model (NA). Those are the regular coupe, the 2+2 and the convertible.

Also consider the transmission. I recommend a manual tranny for any model. The automatic usually goes fast, and you end up rebuilding it many times, even more on a Twin Turbo. If you must get an automatic, I recommend you to also buy a new tranny, according to the model (the NA and the TT are different).

The reason you should choose the TT or the NA is because the electronics inside change, the ECU (the computer) is different, and then you have literally half the car to be exchanged as well. If you buy a NA and want to do the infamous TT Conversion, you will need not only the engine with the turbos, but also intercooler(s), piping, Blow Off Valves (BOV), and differential (they are different, but you can by pass it by swaping the speedomer sensor in the transmission to match the diferential so your speed is accurate), etc, etc.

Assuming you buy the correct vehicle, you have two choices:
One, throw away the old motor and buy a new one. You can buy a brand new one from Nissan (I recommend buying the long block, not the short one so you don’t have to take apart the old heads and move them to the new block), and do a full swap. Or you can buy a rebuilt engine from some shops like Z1 or Stillen.

The second option is to use the old motor. If you know the motor is not blown, you can rebuild it, both block and heads. This option is my preferred as I can choose what components to put inside, and what size to cut the block The VG30DE (that is the code for the engine) can be pushed to high limits without using sleeves. You can take it to a 3.3 L without problems on a TT, and probably over 3.5 on a NA. After that, you need to use sleeves, and you could go as high as almost 4L.

You can also play with the compression level on the NA, and take it from 10.5:1 to around 11:1 and up to 12:1. You will need bigger injectors for this. A strong NA can have about 400HP without using turbos or NOS (nitrous)

But if you spend the same money on a TT, you can go as high as 600-800 HP. You need stronger components for this, and of course bigger turbos, injectors and intercooler(s).
