Invest in a Consumer Report. (under $15) You want the actual book that is published once a year not the magazine. I swear by this publication for many of my more expensive
purchases. This book has saved me thousands of dollars.
You will never live without one once you have your first one.

It is an excellent car for the money. A bit behind the Toyota Avalon, but thousands cheaper. Only major problem is the lack of power. If that doesn't bother you, the Five Hundred is a great buy. Very, very reliable, even more than the Toyota.

No major problems. It is a Consumer Reports 'Recommended' car even though it did not do as well in their scoring system the first year (2005). That was due to a few recalls, (fuel tank, door latch, struts) which consumer reports looks at as if they are the same as something gone wrong. They should change this since recalls are normally automakers fixing something before it goes wrong when they've identified that it could have a high rate of failure.What is the redline for a 1996 Mazda Protege DX with the 1.5L engine?
We've sold many AWD Five Hundreds and I have not had one unhappy customer come back. Most are thrilled at the fuel economy they are getting with customers reporting 26-30+ MPG Highway! It is true that it is a little slow off the line, but it catches up quick and will out accellerate the 2005 Avalon or Chrysler 300 with the V6 on a 60 sec time or 1.4 mile when the transmission is in 'L' (according to Ford). If you get the CVT transmission, make sure you understand how it works and what it does in each setting.
Very smooth transmission, safe AWD, comfortable ride, and lots of space without being hard to maneuver. What's not to like?

real good car as everyone is saying, somewhat slow with the 3.0 DOHC that was a racer in the taurus, but unless you plan on drag racing with the car (most of the issues I find are fleet vehicles where the drivers have a habit of blowing up the transmissions due to stop light racing and other abuses) you won't have any problems.I know of a few that are already approaching 100k miles with no real issues
