There is a 99.9% chance that your vehicle came from the factory with a V8 engine. I have never seen a 4WD 81-87 GMC or Chevrolet with a 6 cylinder engine. Very few of the 6 cyclinders made it into the 2WD's. I am also assuming that your truck does not have a diesel engine.Does anybody know of any cool body kits spoilers etc, for a 1990 volkswagon jetta?
Therefore there are only 2 factory options left, a 305 or a 350. It is easy to tell which engine originally came in your truck by looking at 2 things. First is the emission sticker under the hood right in the middle. It will be in small print, but look close and you will find where it says either 5.0L or 5.7L. A 305 is a 5.0 liter engine and the 350 is a 5.7 liter engine.
Another way to tell which engine it originally had is from the VIN code located under the windshield on the driver's side dash. It should start with the digits 1GCEK14H. Look at the eight digit from the left which is the engine code. If the 8th digit is an E, F, H, or M then it came with a 305. If the 8th digit is an R, K, S, or G then it came with a 350. There is a 95% chance that the 8th digit is an H because the 305 was stock, whereas the 350 was a custom order from the factory.

As far as determining what engine you have now is concerned, you need the the casting number off of the block of the engine. Some 350's will have 010 cast into the block right above the motor mounts on the sides. After you get the casting number off of the block call a large salvage yard or your local GM dealership. i own a repair shop and it could have been a 305 or a 350 either one in that truck,i have seen a lot of those with a 305,s in them,it would have been nice to have known how many cylinders it has,but if its a v-8 305,or 350,if its a 4.3,which it could be they did put some of those in those trucks its going to have 6 cylinders in it,good luck,i hope this helps.

I own a shop, and can tell you it can be a couple of different ones. The most common is the 350. Look for a tag on the radiator housing, or hood that has emission information, and if you will read the real fine print about tune up specifications, you should see what the engine is. It should be a 5.7 (350) as this is the one that was put in most all of them in that year. If this doesn't work out, on the block on the passenger side of the engine, in the front there is a flat place where the engine code is stamped. It will be just below the cylinder head behind the alternator (as most has the alternator on that side). There will be some numbers followed by some letters. The letters will be the engine code. An example will be like TVG preceded by some smaller numbers. If you get these letters, and call a dealer they should be able to tell you what you need to know about the engine. I have code books to tell what these letters mean, but you will need to get the letters. There should be three of the letters, and the older motors had two letters. One must keep in mind that a vehicle that old is apt to not have the orginal engine in it. If you will just go by the letters, you will be on the right track.Glad to help out, Good Luck!
