Okay here is the question. When you shift it into the gear, does your car rev and stay that way even while you are driving? You say it slowly goes, but does it speed up ok or does it sound really loud while you drive? If you are experiencing the stuff I described, the transmission could have gone out. It happened to me with my explorer(1992 model) and I ended up having to get the transmission replaced. I had another ford model car and it did something similar to what you are describing and it was just the bearings on the transmission. You really need to get it to a mechanic to find out for sure, but my guess is its the transmission.

*Edit* I also had a motor head go out on my car, which made the car rev up when I would put it into gear. It would accel very slowly and when it finally got to 3rd gear it would stop. Its hard to tell what it could be, because it could really be anything.

check your fluid first. The best way I ever tested a clutch was to put the vehicle in 3rd, starting out if it doesn't stall, but slowly starts, then check out your clutch, alot of clutch cables can be adjusted. good luck!.
