From my experience the engine will go in from the top. With most front wheel drives, it will be easier to bolt the old tranny to the motor before you lower it back into the shell. Give yourself plenty of room for storage of parts like the hood, wheels, rims, trans axles, and the entire cooling and air conditioning system. By the time you get ready to put the beast back together, it will appear to be easier from underneath due to the front being empty. I would suggest that the whole body of the car be on jack stands so that you don't get any movement from the sway of the rear tires while it is being worked on. Best of luck, take your time, you should be able to get it done.

Grand am is from the top..

To drive or to be driven?

3.4 lt,I think you can take it out the top.If its a manual trans though you might not be able to as the clutch& input shaft on tranny will not give you the clearance.Good luck, thats a good project.
