Volkswagen parts question 1995 cabrio?

There is a part on my car and I have no idea what it's called so I can find out how much it will be replace it. I took a picture of it, but I can't place it in the question section. I'll try to discribe it. It is to the right of the oil stick kind of behind it it looks like a black box with a hose coming out of it, the hose broke right where it goes in the box.

Is the box you're talking abou the air filter? If it is, you should be able to open it up by way of a couple clips.
