If you are seriously considering this van, then take it to a Ford dealer and have them assess trans operation. They should be able to perform a few tests with the Ford scanner and monitor operation of the trans during a roadtest. Also, they should have a look at the fluid. If they have concerns they'll tell you and you'll have invested a couple hundred bucks ensuring that you don't get a surprise repair bill if you buy it. Also, if they assess it as less-than-normal, you could bargain with the seller based on that. Now, if they don;t find anything of concern, you've invested that couple hundred and confirmed that you are buying a good van. Either way, it's better than just taking a chance.I worked for a Ford dealer for and I have a Windstar. We only had one of these vans that came in with transmission problem in the three years that I worked there. That's not bad considering that we sold hundreds and hundreds of them.
Re: overdrive button. The button on your shifter is to allow you to disengage the overdrive gear. You would choose to do that if travelling over a very hilly road and or for prolonged cruising under 40 mph. When the O/D if 'off', the final drive gear ratio remains at 1:1.

So if i were you, i wouldnt buy one. I mean if you get a phenominal deal on it, then replacing the transmission later in life might be worth it.
I bought a 93 probe gt in 2001 for $3000. It had 36,000 miles on it. I looked them up and found that they had numerous transmission problems, but an 8 year old car with 36,000 miles for $3000 is a damn good find. I bought the car, and yes, i had to replace the transmission, but i believe it was worth it.
the overdrive button you are referring too shuts off the overdrive. Overdrive basically changes your shift points and rpms, so it will be slower, but it will be more effecient to run. If its broken, its really not an issue to worry about. Its not going to damage the transmission, but it will wear quicker (may not even be noticable).
To see if the tranny is ok, just drive it. You must makesure it warms up. Cold trannys often work normally, until they warm up, then you will start noticing major problems.
Also, before you buy it, look at the transmission screen/filter. If you have gobs of metals in it, your going to have problems. ALso, you might want to see if it has a magnet in the transmission pan. Im not sure if that particular model does, but most cars do. Your probably going to see metal peices on it, but if theres alot, pass it up.
Ive learned over the years, to equip all my new/used cars with automatic transmisisons with a transmission cooler. They under $35, but in order for it to work, you have to drill into the transmission housing, and i dont have the tools to install it myself, so i pay $165 in labor. This is another thing that will prolong the life of your automatic transmission.
