It sounds like you might be talking about the window regulator. I had to replace three on my '01 Jetta (one of them twice), and two on my '02 A4. It is usually a plastic piece that breaks and causes the window to fall into the door never to rise again, or makes it so the window will motor down into the door but not up into the closed position. This is usually accompanied by a grinding/crunching noise when actuating the window switch either just before regulator failure and/or continuously after the regulator has failed.

If this is the case you need a new window regulator and unfortunately in mose cases you won't have a choice because regulators are sold as a complete assembly. So instead of just replacing a plastic piece that probably costs between 5 and 10 dollars, you have to replace the entire assembly for upwards of $160 for each door.

Try ecstuning.com... a regulator that costs around $150 at the stealership cost me $99.95. But again it depends on the specifics. Replacing the first one myself took about 90 minutes, most of it spent trying to figure out how to remove the window frame. The second one took about 40 minutes.
