This is an easy one: the Chevrolet Vega engine. The engine was underpowered, heavy, terrible fuel mileage and was built with a major design flaw -- a cooling port and oil port were millimeters apart on the head/block and only separated by the head gasket. The gaskets failed by the thousands causing overheating and warping of the aluminum head. After years of warranty hell, battles with owners, threatened class actions suits and daily reaming by automotive press GM finally threw in the towell and started replacing every bad engine under warranty with the tried and true (and also a twenty year old design and only marginally better) 'Iron Duke' conventional pushrod engine. All to no avail, however, as the rest of the car was even worse than the engines.
Those were, without question, the darkest days ever for the American automobile industry. The effects are still felt nearly thirty years later.

One problem was the wrist pin on the cylinder arm causing that slow knocking sound at idle.
the other problem was the fiber cam gear that would sheer because it was literally made out of pressed fabric that drove off of the crack shaft.

Ive been driving GM cars for the last 32 years and have had everything from 2litres, V6, V8's the very early engines in 1950 model cars and have never had any major problems with any of them, the usual minor probs but I think they are the best out there. I have the Buik V6 at the moment, its got 300,000 kms on it and all ive ever done to it is replace the waterpump, but I have always changed the oil and filters every 10,000 kms. So to answer ur question in my case I cant pick a bad engine. Cheers

2.8 Liter V6 carb engines are in my opinion one of the worst motors ever made, what was GM thinking when they've decided to use them on the Chevy S10 Blazers/GMC S15 Jimmy's, they even broke down when they've first used them on the X-body cars (Chevrolet Citation and the like).
