I had a 1996 Jetta 5 speed, I loved it pick up was great, getting on the highway was a breeze, when I traded it in it had 130K and was starting to repalce parts which are not cheap, a hose was $90 and the clutch was $1000 installed by machanic. I would have kept it till it died but I was having another baby and couldn't fit the car seats in, but it was the best car I ever owned.

I have a 97 and I've got her up to 120 mph. The speedo goes to 140 mph. 0-60 is 9 second and higher. Reliable if you fix things as they break and do normal preventive maintenance.
