The expantion tank in my BMW cracked. What might have caused this? Or just bad luck!?

You didn't mention what year or model your car is. Some BMW's are more prone to expansion tank cracking than others. For example, it's less common for an e32 to have a cracked expansion tank then say an e38. Overheating will cause the expansion tank to crack. So will age, as they are only plastic.

I would recommend replacing the tank and the thermostat, and perhaps some hoses as well.
