I know i must sound stupid but the only dipstick i've found has a picture of a steering wheel on the top, the thing i unscrew with a picture of an oil can on it has no dipstick. Thanks for your help.

it depends on what motor you have, but for me (2003 VR6) it's an orange ring that says "motor oil" and it's right behind the middle of the grille...really close to the intake manifold. you should be able to see it right when you open the hood. it will pull straight out, not unscrew.How do I find out if my engine is a SOHC or a DOHC? keep looking or go to any auto parts store and they will show you exactly where it is ....so far you only have checked the power steering fluid and the add engine oil cap..'88 Oldsmobile 98 Regency that won't start?
fine you found the steering fluid reservoir.You need a picture of the motor? Check your owners manual. Dipsticks are basically all the same-a wire rod with a loop at the end for your finger to pull onto. When you lift the hood it should be pretty well in centre of car behind the rad.. I have done it so many years I can't even picture it anymore. You can see that the stick tube goes into the bottom of the engine. If you have auto trans there will be a stick for that as well. Take your car to a local gas station and ask them to show you where...if you can't figure it out.
