I'll give you a general procedure for removing the alternator, but check with a repair manual. I will also link to DIY instructions below that relate to this task, but are for the older generation (E36) 3-series. The process is very similar other than the air ducting.
1. start by disconnecting the battery by disconnecting the ground (black) post first, then disconnect the red post.

2. remove screws and plastic rivets in order to remove the air duct assembly above the radiator. you'll notice this piece directs air into your air filter box.

3. remove the air filter box by unscrewing any screws and disconnecting from the MAF sensor. this is not absolutely necessary, but it is easy to do and it gives you a lot more room to work with.

4. disconnect the engine fan. you will need a tool to hold the water pump bolts steady while you turn the 32mm nut that holds the fan to the front of the engine (actually, it's screwed onto the water pump). the threads on this nut are left handed, so turn clockwise (facing the engine) to untighten it. 5. remove the primary accessory belt that connects to the alternator. there is a belt tensioner that keeps the belt in place. pry off the plastic cap with a flat head screw driver and this should reveal a torx screw. when you turn this torx screw, the tensioner will move and relax the tension on the belt. then, you can remove the belt. be sure to take a picture or draw a diagram of how the belt goes on the various pulleys so you know how to assemble it later. It connects to the crank, water pump, power steering, alternator, and tensioner. See link 2 below for some hints.
6. Now, you can remove the bolts that hold the alternator to the engine bracket. Then disconnect the cables. Make sure you have the battery disconnected in case you forgot step 1. For hints, see link 3 below.

Installation is simply the reverse. Make sure that you connect the new alternator correctly so you don't 'reverse' charge your electrical system. When connecting the battery, connect the red post first, then the black/ground.

I changed mine on my 5 series. Its kinda complicated, if you don't really know about engines. Especially bmw engines. If you wanna do it yourself, get one of those books specifically for the e46. they should show you how to do it exactly. But i would recommend you take it to a shop. Get the alternator online, its cheaper, and you'll only pay for labor, it should be 1-2 hours of labor, so about 150-200 for the labor. Good luck ;)More Questions & Answers ...
