How do I replace the antenna mast on a Volvo S40?

Question:
I am trying to take off the bolt that holds the mast in (on the outside of the car). I can turn it all the way to the top of the bolt but it just keeps turning without coming off. Is their a trick to getting the antenna mast nut off? Why is it that fixing anything on these cars usually involves some off the wall technique?
