The electic motor and batteries are sufficient to drive the vehicle at speeds up to 32mph and over that are supplemented by the gas engine. There is NO direct connection between the gas engine and the drive wheels. This version is recognizable as the city MPG is higher than the highway MPG as the gas engine is always used at highway speeds and only occasionally at speeds used in the city.
