There are tons of options open for you. The best way to increase hp in a car is to get the car turbocharged. If you want to get your car turbocharged then you are also going to need a turbo manifold, intercooler, blow off valve, speed controller, and other things. If you want to start small, invest in a Cold Air Intake, cheap and they add a few ponies to your ride. I had my cat converter hollowed out when it was having problems in my last car and it only adds a couple horsepower on, it's up to you if you want to do it but it hurts emissions and won't pass inspection in many states.

If you want to just add a few you can put an intake on and you will gain 5-10hp. This is usually the cheapest and most effective mod for power you can do next to nitrous. The big loud mufflers you see usually take power away because you lose so much back pressure. If you really want that sound get a full cat back system and you might gain a few hp.
If you put all of the bolt on mods on your car you will probably increase your power by about 25hp and you will have spent a few thousand dollars to do that.

ok, now the corolla is a good car in every way but it does lack some power. im not sure which model you have but the engine is the same as a base 2001-2004 celica with minor differeces. a cheap and fast way to get an extra 40-60 horses it to get a celica gts ecu, fuel rail, and injectors and install them. my buddy did this on his corolla and gained an extra 46 horse power! this is a great and easy way to bulk up that engine for under 500 dollars.

and by the way... all these people suggesting the turbo charger. the corolla is not a good canidate. the compression and internal strength is not there. the valve train is to weak to last on high boost. also the turbo kits are expensive. not 1000 dollars like someone else suggested. i searched for your cars turbo kit and a decent brand starts at 2200 and thats not including labor or tuning. ofourse there are the kits on ebay but those dont last long and are unreliable.
simply put... your car is not meant for a turbo.
