Jeep backfired so loud and checked the muffler...?

Question:
My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee massively backfired today and then died. It started right back up but was very loud. I pulled it over and looked under the hood. It appears that the muffler has burst at the seams and so has the catalytic converter. What the heck happened and how much is the money pit of a crap car going to cost me this time?

it sonds like it may be misfireing that can be one of two things bad plugs and wires or the timeing may be off your best bet whoud be to have a shop look at it and check your spark plug and wires and may be change your gas
